After two days of roaming around Taipei with the heat, humidity,
congestion and homicidal motorists, we decided to take Monday off and just hung out at my
parents'. I installed the Philips CD-writer for my father but failed to install the
modem because I had brought the wrong CD and was missing the driver. Meanwhile Russ
went online (using his company's UUNet subscription) and searched for places to visit in
the next few days. Later in the evening we went food shopping with my parents' at a
large food market. There I bought a modem for my father and a 10-pack CDRs.

After hearing my mother complained about how I have not called or visited
any of my relatives (her sisters), I decided that maybe today's the day to do just that.
Russ and I planned to take the bus to go see Ken-din in the Southern tip of Taiwan,
a very popular beach area. On the way there we'd stop at Taichung and visit my
little aunt (my mother's youngest sister) and her family. I convinced my mother to
come with us and we took the "Fly Dog" bus, which had a stop right across the
street from my parents', to Taichung. It was a 2-hour or so trip which was made to
be very pleasant with the large "Airforce One" style seats (supposedly the same
seats found only on Airforce One, private jet of the US President). We sat on the
second level of the bus, Russ and I sat up front so we could get the front view.
My aunt and uncle were expecting their second child, a son, due sometime
in December. I got to meet their first child, my little girl cousin, for the first
time. She was turning two in a few months and was absolutely adorable. It took
her a while to warm up to me and I didn't push it too hard in the beginning, since I
remembered how much I disliked it when I was a little girl. My aunt and uncle took
us out to dinner at a bamboo-themed restaurant. Russ and my uncle ordered fried
bamboo worms and everyone had a taste exept me! I really tried, but the tens of
little feet along the bodies of the worms just turned my stomach.
After dinner we all went to my aunt's home where we sat and ate the fruits
we bought earlier on. Mama decided that she wouldn't stay for the night and left at
around 9pm. My aunt gave us a gift certificate to a beach resort near Ken-din for a
free night of stay. One funny thing that happened was that my uncle gave Russ a
little clock as a gift after I specifically instructed Russ that giving clocks was a bad
omen in the Chinese tradtion.
The "Airforce One" style seats - you won't find seats like this in a
Greyhound bus!
